They push 'em out like bullets part 2 - 7:23 PM
Let's continue the onslaught on the new maps...
- The first demo to be done on sgc5 comes from courtesy of Jordi Ros who did the Easy Run in a time of 0:52. Jonny also had a go at it but to no avail as Jordi already had submitted a faster demo :)
- But Jonny was the first to submit a demo for the Nightmare Run though, well actually he's the only one so far, and he managed to complete the map in 1:06.
- We all knew that the Nightmare 100% of close wouldn't last long, and here's the proof. Ilkka Kurkela snatched the record from Jozsef with a one second improvement to give him a time of 0:10. Valeriy Burmistrov was only a few minutes away from getting this record, literally!
- Hannu Kankaanpaa did a very cool Easy 100% of altus2. He used the teleports wisely which gave him a time of 0:31. Jonny also had a go at this one, but once again too late and too slow :)
- But to dwell his sorrows a little he did the Nightmare 100% instead. He strolled his way through nice and easily and got a time of 1:20.
- Jonny was also kind enough to fill out the 100% holes for tod. He did the Easy 100% in 1:04, and the Nightmare 100% in 1:02.
- And as the final demo we have an outstanding demo from Jozsef Szalontai who improved his previous Nightmare Run of bbelief3 by 1 second to get 0:50.
This update will most likely contain some errors as we're still receiving loads of demos for the new maps, and it's dificult to sort out who did what and who did it first etc.
All demos download is available >here (UK) and here (Denmark).

They push 'em out like bullets!!! - 11:39 PM
Holy cow, you guys won't believe how many of the same entries we have received since yesterday, I don't even dare to count the amount!
Let's kick it off with the most popular map of the new batch.
- Daniel Andersson was the first one to conquer the runs on close. He did the Easy Run in 0:05, and the Nightmare Run also in 0:05. Several sent in exactly the same demos but to no avail as Daniel came first. Those people includes; Anders, Amrik, Hannu, Jordi, David and ThomasB!!!
Is this optimised already? Well, Ilkka tells us that he's got a 0:04.97 using HFR...
- Daniel was also the first to submit demos for the 100%'s. He did the Easy 100% in 0:14 and the Nightmare 100% in 0:14, but Jozsef Szalontai had other intentions. He improved both of Daniel's demos by 3 seconds to get 0:11 on Easy and 0:11 on Nightmare. Too bad for Ilkka, Amrik & Anders who didn't submit their demos fast enough. Jozsef wasn't done though and he improved the Easy 100% by yet another second to get 0:10. Optimised?
Next up we have demos on tod which also proved to be popular.
- Jonny Andersson was the first one to submit demos for this map. He did the Easy Run in 0:22 and the Nightmare Run in 0:22. He used what you can refer to as 'the long way' :)
- Arturo Garcia Lasca was the first to submit a demo using the fast route. He improved Jonny's Easy Run by 9 seconds using two rocket jumps to get 0:13.
- Soon after that Jozsef improved Arturo's demo by 2 seconds by using a double rocket jump instead of two seperate RJs to get 0:11.
- And finally Martin Selinus improved Jonny's Nightmare Run by 10 seconds to get 0:12 (Two seperate RJs. This one won't last long :-)).
The last map from the new batch we received demos on were
altus2
- First one to give this map a go was Hannu Kankaanpaa who did the Easy Run in 0:23.
- Ilkka improved that by 2 seconds to get 0:21. Anders also submitted a 0:21 but later than Ilkka.
- But Anders also did the first Nightmare Run in a time of 0:22.
There have also been 4 very cool demos on maps other than the new ones.
- Jozsef has improved his Easy Run of desout by one second to get 0:30.
- And he also improved his Nightmare Run by the same amount to get 0:29.
- Anders is not yet finished with abw. He has managed to yet again beat his time on the Easy Run by one second to get a nice 1:40.
- And he improved Robert's mad Nightmare Run by 15 seconds to get a solid 2:38.
Damn, you guys are good. There are already 5 more demos sitting in the inbox! But I will have to offer my apologies to Alex, Hank & Thomas because I'm not fucking doing them tonight! ;-)
This update might be a bit messy and disjointed but that's for two reasons. Firstly, it was hard to sort out all the entries that were submitted. And secondly it was such a tiring job that it took two of us to write the update. So if we screwed up something please don't hesitate to tell us. (True SDA afficionados might like to try to work out which bits I wrote and which bits Stubby wrote, except for this paragraph, of course, as it's completely fucking obvious. :-))
All demos download is as usual available here (UK) and here (Denmark) because the stupid links won't work for a day or so yet. And don't expect the Denmark link to work until tomorrow morning as Stubby has gone to bed to choke his chicken and won't be able to upload it until he has taken the hamster out of his arse. :-)

It's that time of month again.... - 3:46 PM
....no, I'm not talking about that awful dreaded thing women has every month, I'm talking about NEW MAPS!!!
The second batch consists of three fairly small maps, plus one medium sized map.
- First up we have altus2 - Altus Mors by Travis Pease. The map is available from here. Please call your demos for this map altu_xxx.
- Secondly we have close - Close Quarters by Seth Williams. The map is available from here. Please call your demos for this map clos_xxx.
- Next up we have sgc5 - Notlob's Base by Steve Clarke. The map is available from here. Please call your demos for this map sgc5_xxx.
- And finally we have tod - Tower Of Death by Scott McNutt. The map is available from here. Please call your demos for this map tod_xxx.
We even have a third batch of maps coming up soon, we just need to fix a couple of issues like a brand new progs etc.
Enjoy, and happy running...

Alex Owns Amrik! - 11:43 PM
At the end of the last demo update I mentioned a suggestion by Amrik Kochhar to use an Ogre-Grenade jump to the Silver Key to speed up the runs on hip3m3. The suggestion turned out to be a load of bollocks, but Nolan then mentioned to Amrik that the key could be intercepted by using a bunny from just before the edge of the platform. Amrik came back some hours later with this nice Easy Run in 0:41. Nolan was, frankly, disgusted that he'd only managed a one second improvement, saying that the trick was easily worth a three second gain.
And unfortunately for Amrik, Aleksander Osipov was listening in using some strange Finnish telepathy technique and by using the very same bunny (and a different start route) managed to improve Amrik's time from the last update by four seconds, surpassing Nolan's prediction. 0:38
Alex also applied the same route to the Nightmare Run and came soooooo close to equalling his Easy Run time with this 0:39.1, 9 seconds faster than Optic. This demo also wins my "Coolest trick in this update" award for the perfectly executed spiral bunny down the spiral stairs ending with a monster slide off a DeathKnight.
Speaking of DeathKnights, Valeriy Burmistrov has optimised yet another level. This time he has scraped one final second off of Evan's pg4 Easy Run to get 0:06. Do you know, to this day I have no idea how many and what kind of monsters appear at the end of this map. The first time I ever played it I worked out the telefrag trick (well, it was very obvious). Apparently there's a gold dragon there but all I remember is a big pile of gibs. :-)
Actually, going back to Alex, I'm a bit dissapointed that he didn't send us a demo in time to join the list at the start of the last update, because I have just noticed that a cool corruption of the middle of his name would have been Droz. :-)
David Hocking has planted his foot firmly up Shambler's butt-hole with this fine Easy Run demo on ih1m2. Two naked gren jumps with monsters all around (I love the placement of the second grenade. I think "haphazard" might be the word. :-)) Make this a very tough run. 0:30. A 9 second improvement.
Next, Carl Tholin has decided that Thomas can't own all the czg03 records.
- First he destroyed the Easy 100% with a completely different route. Given the very open layout of this map there was always going to be loads of scope for route planning and this one has proved to be 68(!) seconds faster. 4:45. The minute after he picks up the first quad is just mad...
- But that demo is completely overshadowed by his Easy Run. I guess that Carl has grown some bigger balls recently as this needs testicles of iron to do. It was some time ago that Shambler first speculated on the Message Board that using the quad would speed this up, but I certainly didn't expect him to use this quad to do a very clever naked QGJ all the way to the top. This allowed him to get a 12 second improvement to 1:02. It would not be too hard to break the one minute barrier from here and Carl also mentions both an alternative route and some new revelations about Jonny's body in his .txt, and he was so pleased with the demos that he sent them in three fucking times. ;-)
Next up we have two 100% demos on climb from Arturo García Lasca.
- He did the Easy in 0:48, recapturing his record back from Fabian by two seconds. According to our Trivia King Stefan
this will be the 1000th demo submitted to SDA this year. It's a shame for Ken that it follows so hard on the heels of the recent "Race For 5000" otherwise he might also have won some tat.
- He also took the Nightmare 100% back from FAB, this time by 4 seconds to get 0:47. This is one second faster than the Easy 100%, mostly due to the more static play of the Ogres on Nightmare skill. (I.e. They just stand there chucking grenades at you rather than running around making themselves harder to hit.)
Our man in Sosnovy Bor, Dan Stukanev, has pitched in with a rather good Nightmare Run on compugib which has toppled Alex from his total dominance of this level. He improved it by one second to get 0:33.
We had a nice entry for the RotW Competition 6 from Robert Axelsson but he didn't climb down from his woman in time to send it in before the deadline. A shame really as he would have got an overall 5th place.
But he did find the time to fill the gap in the abw tables and do the very hard Nightmare Run in the impressive time of 2:53. I lost track of the number of times he nearly died after the first 15. :-)
And no update would be complete without Jozsef Szalontai, whoring it up on a Beyond Belief level. This time he has changed the end route on bbelief3 to improve Martin's Nightmare Run by two seconds to get 0:51. He thinks another two seconds should be possible and I can't wait to see that demo.
Don't forget to check out the Windlash Runs page which Stubby has updated (Evan, where are you, Dude?) with the latest crop of Cheated and Naked Runs. There are some real treats here so head on over and take a look.

RotW contest #6 results are up! - 1:07 AM
It has already taken me several hours to finish up the rotw stuff and I'm extremely tired and I want to get some sleep, so I'll make this short. Head on over to the
Run of the Whenever page to see who won and who advanced in the
Championship Ladder.

We Have A Winner! - 8:21 PM
Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, the dust has now settled following the stampede in the run up to 5000th posted demo.
We had entries from
Marvin,
Axel,
Nordie,
Bergie,
Sazzle,
Stubby,
Kochie and
Neimie. But of course, THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!
So in the order they were received...
- This demo was actually sent in before the last update but unfortunately to the wrong e-mail address. :-) At 4994 we have Anders Nordensten who has improved his Easy Run of abw by four seconds to get 1:42.
- Making a strong showing with the first of six demos in this update, at 4995 Martin Selinus has improved his Easy 100% of guard by two seconds to get 0:49. I have no idea what this demo is like as he sent it in with the wrong name and I couldn't work out what it was suppossed to be. Luckily Thomas sorted it out. :-)
- He also improved both of his runs on assassin by one second within the same minute! Easy Run in 0:25 4996 and Nightmare Run also in 0:25 4997.
- Robert Axelsson sent in an Easy Run of abw in 1:45 but it arrived after Anders's demo above so it is worth absolutely fuck all. :-)
But soon after he sent in a very cool two second improvement to his tfl Easy Run. Smoother running and an earlier grenade at the Gold Key allowed him capture demo number 4998 with this 1:10.
- Thomas Bergendorff has gone absolutely bat-shit on czg03. He completely destroyed Amrik's Easy run by a very impressive 21(!) seconds. 1:14 4999.
And to prove that sending in multiple demos pay's off, Thomas also improved Tim's Easy 100% of the same map by 88 seconds. Which means that
THOMAS
BERGENDORFF
has given us demo number 5000 with this 5:53. As a reward for this he will be receiving...
- His name written here in large, multi-coloured letters. (See above. But only in red and yellow as I can't be bothered to go and look up the codes for anything else).
- It seems that the "pictures" idea was very popular so he will be receiving naked pictures of Nolan (as soon we can find a camera with a strong enough zoom), Me (as soon as we can find a camera that can handle such large objects) and Stubby (as soon as we can find someone willing to take the picture).
- The entire contents of The Archive on a presentation CD. (As soon as we can come up with a cool cover for it, we're all crap at art. Any offers?)
Congratulations to Thomas and a big thank-you to everyone else that has contributed in any way, ever to anything at all. Now let's get on and record the next 5000. :-)
Thomas also filled the gap for the Nightmare Run of czg03 to give himself all four records on the map. You will, of course, notice that this is faster than Amrik's Easy Run. ;-) 1:32.
Martin sent in three more superb demos, unfortunately these were literally a few minutes too late.
- He did the Nightmare Run of village one second faster than Ilkka. 1:09.
- And he also improved Ilkka's Easy run by three seconds with the addition of a second barrel boost. I hate to think how many times he must have died while perfecting this one. 1:01. He also challenges Ilkka to fight back...
- And for his final demo in this update he takes a second from Ken's Nightmare Run on climb. 0:24
It looks like Jozsef Szalontai has optimised another Beyond Belief record. This time it is the Nightmare Run of bbelief1 which he has done in 0:15, one second faster than Alex.
The irrepressible Timo Nieminen keeps on working on the ID Maps. He has improved his Easy Run of The Tomb of Terror by a second to get 0:25. I just love the double OG jump at the start of this run. It's just the kind of trick I love watching because I know I will never be able to do it myself. Outstanding.
Staying down in The Tomb we have Thomas Stubgaard who also seems to be unstoppable on the ID levels at the moment. He has made fairly light work of improving his Easy 100% by one second to get 0:51. Love them curly bunnies in the lava room!
Amrik Kochhar will not stop until every Hipnotic record is his. This time it is the Easy Run of hip3m3 which he managed to do one second faster than Ilkka. 0:42. He includes a suggestion for an even faster way to do it in his .txt but ohhhh, man it would be hard.
And we will finish up this (once again) incredibly long update the same way we started it. With Anders improving his Easy Run of abw by yet another second to get 1:41. I think this will need a new trick to make much more progress.
That's all for now my dear, sweet, lovely, fragrant friends. I'm off for four days in a tiny house in the middle of nowhere with no phone, television or PC and the nearest neighbours are over a mile away. Total peace. :-) Stay clean!

Je Suis Un Arse. - 8:50 AM
Thanks to all of you who have kindly pointed out my obvious mistake in the last update.
Unfortunately, as you all know and I forgot, for a coop record to be valid it needs to be faster than the current Single Player time. As Snoop and Stu's jzblue_3 Easy Run was one second slower than Markus's I'm going to have to remove it from the tables. :-(
Sorry guys, but choosing to challenge a 4 second Markus run was maybe a little ambitious anyway. ;-)
This does, of course, mean that the count of demos reverts to (4993).

Christmas is coming, which means I get to rrriiip the heads off some more turkeys! *drool* - 9:57 PM
Evening folks. I'd like to start this update by calling for a Jihad against my former friend and fellow SDA updater
Stubby The Bastard for laughing at my haircut in the last update. My revenge for this will, of course, be slow and painful and I would like to point out that I've
never had a mullet in my life. :-)
The countdown to demo 5000 continues. There is some confusion about exactly which number we are up to so I have decided to draw the line here at 4985. The demos listed here are numbered according to the time they arrived in the SDA mailbox.
abw has seen some hot competition in the last few days.
- Stefan Schwoon has found the time to improve Tim's Easy 100% by seven seconds to get 2:27 (4987). It warms the heart to hear that the veteran runner and all round PERL wizard still cares...
- The Easy Run has come under attack from Amrik Kochhar who used one of Fr3n's tricks he posted on the Message Board (although Amrik will probably claim he thought of it first...) to own Robert's time by 14 seconds. 1:49 (4988).
- But very soon afterwards Anders Nordensten improved this with another three seconds to get 1:46 (4989). He also uses a nice little trick at the silver key that doesn't actually save any time but does make surviving a lot easier.
Jozsef Szalontai has improved the two Runs on....
No, let me start again.
Jozsef Szalontai has optimised the two Runs on bbelief4.
- He used some much quicker monster avoiding at the start before doing the outrageously long, curly slope jump to the exit button on Easy to exit in 0:18 (4990). One second faster than Martin.
- Yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda Nightmare yadda yadda 0:18 (4991). Yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda.
There has also been a fair amount of action on tfl. This level has plently of health, plenty of weapons and plenty of ammo. It also has plenty of big monsters and absolutely no fucking armour. :-)
- Robert Axelsson has improved Ken's Easy Run by six seconds to get 1:12 (4986). What could drive a man to make such a run? Luuuurrrrrrve. Or, more likely, lust. He dedicated the run to his girlfriend Elin so presumably if someone beats the run they also get to have the girl. ;-)
- He has also filled the gap in the tables for the very difficult Nightmare Run. 1:30 (4992).
- And I made a few route changes to the Nightmare 100% which allowed me to improve Tim's time by 49 seconds. 4:46 (4993).
And finally, we have a coop from David Hocking and SDA newcummer Stuart Mason. They used up 34961 bytes of the world's bandwidth to produce this jzblue_3 Easy Run in 0:05 (0:04 ;-)) (4994). Nice of you to join us, Stu. Let's see some more of what you can do.
So there you have it. Only six demos to go to the big five oh oh oh. Hopefully you're all getting stuck in to the current Run Of The Whenever and if ANYONE gets beaten by me in this one then they might as well just give up now. :-)
There was something else I really meant to say but for the life of me I can't remember what it was.

Christmas is a coming, the geese are getting fat. Please put a penny in the old man's hat... - 4:41 PM
Ok, this update will seem like crap compared to Richard's gigantic update.....
- David Hocking has improved his Easy Run on tfl even further by 23 seconds to get 1:30. He accomplished this by adding a grenade-jump to the first switch.
- But soon after Arturo Garcia Lasca sent in his demo which didn't use the grenade-jump, but somehow he managed to get it 12 seconds faster than David anyhow. He got a time of 1:18.
- We received the first Easy Run on abw which comes from courtesy of Robert Axelsson. He did a decent run which gave him a time of 2:03.
- Thomas Bergendorff blasted his way through czg03 like a madman on valium. He managed to bitchslap Nolan's Nightmare 100% by 385! seconds to give him a time of 7:38. I'm impressed!
- And finally we have a very neat demo on e2m3 from Timo Nieminen who fought back against Martin who so rudely stole his record. He shaved 2 seconds off of Martin's time to get 1:11.
Check out this thread on the Compet-N forum. It has quite an amusing development :)
David Hocking followed Tim's advice and filled out a player profile which you can view here.
And as the grand finale I think we all should have a big laugh at Richard's expense. This is the man you all admire and love so much for his humorous updates! That's the look of a real MAN boys and girls....sideburns that would make even Elvis proud. You can't help but love that mullet too :-)

Salute Me, Hannu!... - 11:12 PM
...That's the cry that went up from two SDA regulars this week as
Jozsef Szalontai and
Amrik Kochhar both did the incredibly tricky double slope jump to the silver key on
kjsp1.
- Joe was the first to do it, allowing him to improve Hannu's Easy run by 18 seconds to get 0:53.
- Then Amrik did it (on the second attempt...) during a Nightmare Run to get 1:12.
Anders Nordensten and Tim Doherty have also been fighting it out for the Easy 100% on this very popular map.
- First Anders beat Tim's ancient (one week) record by 8 seconds (just by running it in a bit more organised fashion) to get 3:41.
- But Tim heard about this and so fought back to beat Anders by 8 seconds (just by running it in a bit more organised fashion) to get 3:33.
Well it seems that the new maps have got a few mixed reviews. Some people love them, some people hate them. There have been a few people saying that they're not short or easy enough, but to be honest when you have Nolan, Thomas and Me looking at maps what do you really expect. After all, we all three of us have a history of prefering to work our way around a long and hard one.
Damn, that was a lot of text just to get in one smutty comment! But it made me chuckle to myself so I'm afraid you're stuck with it. But for those wishing for some slightly quicker maps we should have something to announce within a couple of weeks of the end of the latest Run Of The Whenever.
Now we have everyone's favourite Mad Axeman Thomas Stubgaard with yet another very cool ID record improvement. He has beaten one of my favourite demos, Alex's Nightmare 100% of Castle Of The Damned, by four seconds to give him 1:06. This now makes 10 straight demo updates with an ID improvement in it! You people just don't know when to give up...
Making his comeback after far too many months away we have Marlo Galinski recapturing his Easy 100% of black1 from Mads-Peter by 13 seconds. He makes it look so simple... 2:24.
Getting back to the new levels we have two more amazing demos from Joszef on perssp2.
- He did this Nightmare Run some months ago when the level was first released and it uses two very difficult tricks (this was apparently the only time he ever managed to exit!) to finish in 0:37.
- But it's a little bit easier on Easy skill as you start with Red Armour. So it didn't take him too much effort to get this 0:31. Totally owning Amrik's time by 42 seconds.
We finally have some demos on tfl. It's a shame people haven't liked this level too much as I'm sure it has good potential.
- David Hocking has been snooping around the level and finally sent in this 1:53 Easy Run.
- Tim has filled the gaps in the 100% tables. He did the Easy in 3:49...
- ...and the Nightmare in 5:35. It's strange how now Tim's exams have begun he suddenly starts submitting more demos than he ever has done before. :-)
And as if to prove me right he has done a czg03 Easy 100% tablefiller. 7:21.
That's it for the new maps, but we also have a couple of regular custom map demos.
- The unstoppable Joszef has improved Markus's Easy Run of mcomplex by one second. As you would expect, the bunny speeds here are just amazing, and as Joe says, beating
a Markus demo is always hard, no matter how long ago
he had made it. 0:42.
- And for the last of our regular demos we have the first submission for a long time from Arturo García Lasca who has done the Easy Run of hellctle one second faster than The Mighty Fleck to get 1:20. Those of you that are familiar with Ken and his postings on the Message Board won't be suprised to learn that the comments in his .txt file run to a record breaking 937 words!! (Roughly, I couldn't actually be arsed to count them :-)).
Amrik has also improved his Easy Run Maraton of the black levels by 10 seconds to give him a much better but still highly improvable 4:44.
And now on to the coops. We have had two sets of runners sending in demos this week and it really couldn't get much better than these guys.
We have all hoped for the return of the Team Supreme and sure enough Attila Csernyik and Peter Horvath have produced two fine new demos.
- They improved their Easy Run of bbelief1 by one second just by much slicker team play and better bunnys. 0:11.
- And they also took one second off of their bbelief2 Easy Run by using a much earlier SSG blast to send Attila flying across the water. 0:13.
Could anyone compete with this level of quality coop play? Just ask Alexander Osipov and Ilkka Kurkela. They started off with a table filler, just to get their eye in.
Then they improved two of their own times.
- Staying on mcomplex they improved their Easy 100% by 15 seconds to get 1:10.
- Then they took one second from their Easy Run of mexx1, exiting in 0:08.
- And since they were on the map they took the Nightmare run off of Robert and Rickard, also with an 0:08.
They then felt the need to take some MP records.
- First to fall were the two runs on critters, they took the Easy run from DanielH and DanielA by 1 second to get 0:15.
- And then exactly the same route on exactly the same map (except on Nightmare skill) beat exactly the same fellows by exactly the same improvement to get exactly the same time. 0:15.
- And of course no coop session would be complete without taking an ID record. They improved Jonny and DanielH's Easy 100% of Castle Of The Damned by one second to get a very impressive 0:36.
And for a grand finale they totally destroyed Evan and Basil's Nightmare 100% of hip1m2 by a massive 33 seconds (!) to get 1:24.
Holy shit. That was one mutha of a long update. I'm knackered! I started this at 09:00 this morning completely sober and, after endless interuptions, have finished it at 23:00 completely wasted. But before I go there's one or two items of news which I'd like to draw your attention to.
- Firstly, for all you lovers of Doom the Compet-N website has been given a complete overhaul and looks, frankly, nearly as good as SDA!
- Secondly, don't forget to drop in to Ingmar's Illmind Moves site every now and then as the trick demos keep coming in.
- And finally, we have now had (according to the mine of SDA trivia that is Stefan) 4980 demos submitted to The Archive since Nolan recorded his first shitty keyboard demo! We are hoping to give out some sort of prize for the 5000th demo but have absolutely no idea what it will be. So far, ideas include...
- A picture of Nolan, naked.
- A picture of Stubby, naked.
- A picture of Me, Stubby, Nolan and Optics Mom, naked. (From Shambler's private collection).
- Any suggestions?
That's all for tonight. A big thank-you to Stubby for mentioning my birthday in the last update and an even bigger thanks to all those that ICQ'd me to wish me a happy birthday. Cheers guys. :-)
Massive all demo download available from, as ever, here (UK) and here (Denmark).

RotW contest #6 is up! - 3:00 PM
A new edition of
Run of the Whenever has seen the light. This time we challenge you to compete on a map courtesy of Attila Csernyik. Have you got what it takes to compete in the 110m hurdles? Are you a true competitor to Colin Jackson? Well, if you feel up for the challenge, then go find your running shoes and run, run as fucking fast as you can....
Grab the map here and remember to always read the rules thoroughly before submitting your entries.
You won't get the usual 20 championship points for a winning entry, but only 10 points as there's four types of disciplines this time around. This means that the maximum score that could be given for all disciplines would be 40 championship points in total.
Thanks to Aleksander for pointing out a stupid mistake I had done in the readme.txt. So if you've already grabbed the map before this update came online, then please download it again to clear out any confussion :-)
This contest will last for 14 days. Deaday, November 18th,17:00 EST, 22:00 GMT, 23:00 CET, 2001.
P.S. A big hooray for Morfans who turned 32 today. Definitely the oldest speedrunner in town :-)
But please don't bug him too much on ICQ today, as he'll most likely have a huge hangover from last night.....

Well Shiver Me Timbers! - 10:46 PM
I'm not even going to bother saying anything here. To keep you from these next two demos would be a crime against humanity.
Markus Taipale has totally excelled himself yet again with two outrageously good ID demos. These are so obviously Must Download that I'm not even going to say it. (Okay, I know I just did, but you know what I mean).
- He has improved Martin's Nightmare Run of The Elder God Shrine by two seconds by adding Ingmar's Gold Key trick to the usual slope jump, fiend push, double GJ, quad GJ, etc, etc. 0:37
- Then he improved his own easy run of Chambers of Torment by one second by using a brand new fiend boost which gives him increbible speed to the silver key and an (optimum?) time of 0:25.
It would appear that Nolan "Grandmaster" Pflug has been abusing his position as Head Honcho at SDA by getting in some early practice on czg03. It's the only way I can assume he has managed to do this as near as damn it optimised Nightmare 100% so soon after the map's release. I am very disappointed that a man of respect such as Nolan could behave in such a way, but I must say that moves such as leaving the YA secret until the end and consistantly failing to kill most of the Scrags were a stroke of genius. 14:03
All the rest of Today's demos come courtesy of two people. Amrik "Two Aitches" Kochhar and Tim "Not Shannon" Doherty.
- Tim has continued with his Marathon Mania. This time doing the Easy 100% through the ikspq levels in 12:51.
- Amrik has filled the gap for the Easy Run of perssp2 with this nice 1:13. I don't know how long this record will stand, though, as I keep hearing rumours that Jozsef has done some rather fine runs on this map...
- Tim also did the ikspq Easy Run in the time of 4:51. A nice run that shows what marathons are there for: carrying high explosive weaponry into levels that don't usually have them.
- Amrik has followed up is recent Easy Run on hip3m4 with a damn fine Nightmare Run. He improved Optic's time by three seconds to get 1:19. This is not only a classy piece of running but it also means that he has beaten Romanov Maxim's (for those that remember him) cheating wh0r3 run. Good man, Amrik.
- Tim has also filled the empty Nightmare 100% slot in the kjsp1 tables. A little cautious in places so quite improvable but it can be damn hard work staying alive long enough. 5:53.
- Amrik is also no stranger to Marathons. Now that the black episode is open he has done the Easy Run in the, well, okay time of 4:54.
All demos download available here (UK) and here (Denmark). Sorry I missed a couple of demos last time. Typically it was my own demo I forgot to include. There have been a couple of demos come in while I've been writing this but lack of time precludes me from posting them. :-( So digest these demos over the next couple of days and prepare yourself for another round of quality speedruns. The same, only more so!

Love The New ICQ Nick, Jonny. - 11:41 PM
And now for a lightening fast round up of the demos that arrived between the last update and yesterday evening (don't ask why, the inscrutable ways of the Morfans are not for mortal minds to ponder. (Actually it's because I gave up drinking alcohol for the whole of October and it's very, very nearly November and so I have to go and remind myself what an enormous gin and tonic looks like. :-) )), including the first few on the new maps!
Martin Selinus has decided to fight back at Jozsef over the Hell's Atrium Long Way Nightmare Run. This looks like it was hard work but you can't argue with the quality of the bunnies or the fact that it's two seconds faster. 0:56.
Martin has also teamed up with Anders Nordensten to do two impressive coops.
- They did they Easy Run of bbelief3 5 seconds faster than Justin and Evan to get 0:30.
- Then they did the Nightmare Run of The Sewage System 1 second faster than Ilkka and Juho to get 0:16. They say that they think 0:15 is possible...
On to the new levels. First Amrik Kochhar has done the Easy Run of czg03 with a nice route. A little messy at the end, though. 1:35
Moving on to kjsp1 and we have two very nice demos.
- All it took was a swim, some rock climbing, a key, a hedge jump and a couple of rocket jumps and Hannu Kankaanpaa had finished the Easy Run in the time of 1:11.
- Tim Doherty decided he wouldn't bother with all that and instead just waded through every monster he could find to do the Easy 100% in 3:49.
Tim also went mad on abw doing both 100% records in two solid demos. He did the Easy in 2:34 and the Nightmare in 3:40. He cut the health very fine indeed at the end of this one. :-)
And finally for tonight we move on to perssp2.
- The last of Tim's demos for this update is the Easy 100% which he did in the time of 3:24.
- But I decided to also have a crack at it and managed to get 2:33, 51 seconds faster. Nice map this one, Fr3n. Heavy slaughter from start to finish. :-)
That's it for now, the rest of the demos will be posted in the next couple of days. Keep 'em coming. :-)

Trinidad Tornado Tackles Tur Torment! - 1:56 AM
Evening all! I'd like to start by apologising for the length of time it's taken me to get this update finished. You just would not belieeeeeeve the carnage going on in the Morfy household over the last couple of days! Then, as soon as I sat down to do the update I accidently started playing Quake for the next three hours. But now, before my ICQ explodes from "Are you updating?" overload, this weeks demos...
Let's start off with Daniel Andersson and his old, old demo (well, it's been sat in my inbox for a week) on czg_moon. Just when we all thought this level had quietened down he improved Amrik's Nightmare Run by three seconds with some nifty bunny work to get 0:37.
Amrik Kochhar might have just lost one record but I don't think he'll be too upset. He has sent in three demos on the Hipnotic levels this week.
- He took a second off of Dan's hip3m4 Easy Run (despite the fact that his .txt file says Nightmare. *grrrrr*) to give him 1:06.
- But that was nothing compared to his next offering. He decided to improve Ilkka's Easy Run Marathon of hip3, and improve it in style he did. Some very nice running gave him 3:33, 13 seconds faster.
- But he saved the best 'til last as he joins the Hipnotic Elite who have done the jump on hip3m1. Donner, Fleck and now Kochhar have flown to the top of the tower with a spike mine up their butt, and Amrik has done it one second quicker ('coz his butt's bigger). 0:52.
Last time we saw newcomer Anders Nordensten make his first contributions to The Archive. He has followed it up by shaving one second off of Fabian's thought to be optimised Easy Run of The Bastardry. Way to go Anders! 0:21
And it's just as well he did otherwise he would have no records left because Max Rebo, Mr Daniel Magnusson, has fought back and retaken both of his mntbase2 Run records.
- First he ran the Easy route one second faster. 0:52. This also includes a nice egg demo showing Daniel abusing a poor, defenseless, stupid animal.
- For the Nightmare Run he decided to skip the armour and just stay alive by running faster than the dumb grunts could shoot. He first got a slightly messy 0:57, six seconds faster than Anders, but he soon improved that by another two seconds to get 0:55.
The marathons just keep on coming from Typhoon Tim Doherty. He has done the first ever marathons on the Black Episode.
- He did the Nightmare 100% in 12:35.
- And then he breezed through the Easy 100% in 8:12. Sort of. He had to change skill to 2 for the stooopid bskill level but I think we can forgive him. If you're thinking of trying an Easy marathon on these maps see his .txt file for details.
Staying on the Black Levels, Mads-Peter Stubgaard has proved that at least one Stubgarrd has got some Quake skillz. He improved Marlo's Easy 100% of black1 by six seconds to get 2:37. Tim, watch this demo to see how to avoid the fish in the water. ;-)
Mads-Peter then teamed up with his big brother Thomas "The Axe" Stubgaard to tackle the Easy 100% of The Haunted Halls. They improved Evan and Justin's time by three seconds to get a comfortable 1:11.
That's the end of the demos, and now, Ladies and Gentlemen, we have the first batch of new maps....
- First up we have abw - All Black Within by Jim Hughes. A cheeky little level available from here with a review by Shambler here. Please call your demos for this map abw_xxx.
- Secondly we have czg03 - Ceremonial Circles by (obviously) the mighty CZG. The map is available here with a review by Shambler here. Please call your demos for this map czg3_xxx.
- As if that wasn't enough we ave also added kjsp1 - Avanipaala Praasaada by KillJoy. The map is available here with a review by Shambler here. Please call your demos for this map kj1_xxx.
- We also added the strangely compelling perssp2 - Return To Dust by someone whose name escapes me for the moment. (Okay, it was Fr3n :-)) The map is available here with a review by Shambler here. Please call your demos for this map dust_xxx.
- And finally tfl - The Forgotten Level by Anders Persson. The map is available here with a review by Shambler, errrr, there isn't one. Please call your demos for this map tfl_xxx.
So no excuses. Get your best running trousers on (or "pants" as the Americans will insist on calling them) and let the battle begin. But be quick (hee hee) because there's even more coming soon(ish).
Happy running!

SDA Rules Review. - 4:57 PM
Hey there people. Now that Nolan is taking a well deserved rest we've decided that it would be a good time to remind people of the rules and guidelines for submitting demos and suggestions. Most people know this stuff already but recently one or two people have been letting standards slip...
- Send all normal speed run demos to sda. RotW demos should be sent to stubgaard. High quality hetrosexual pornography should be sent to morfans. (This last one is a joke, BTW.)
- If a link to a demo doesn't work, please mail us and say. If all the links aren't working 'coz the FilePlanet mirrors are broken AGAIN then we will get really fucking annoyed if you mail us and then ICQ us every ten minutes to let us know they're still not working.
- Demos will be added to the Archive (usually) a couple of times a week. Don't panic if you send in a demo on the same day as an update and it isn't there. Any new demos that arrive after I've started writing an update get held over until the next one. (Usually because I don't write them at home. :-))
- It makes our life much, much easier if you make the first line of your comments in the .txt file "X seconds faster than XXXXX". If you include the date you recorded the demo (not the date you wrote the .txt) then that would also be a great help.
- Constructive criticism is good. Constant bitching is bad. This isn't our job, we do it because this is a great site and we love playing Quake and watching Quake demos.
- If at all possible try to avoid being Ken. ;-)
- Use only ID released versions of Quake, not ports.
Simple, eh? As I said at the top, 90% of people are doing these things anyway, most of those that don't are new to the scene, and those who seem to be deliberately trying to annoy us (and I'm not talking about Ken this time) can kiss me right on my big, purple bell end.
Which brings us on to a subject that has been quite a hot Message Board topic recently. New maps. We have had a good long think about this and have decided the following.
- Several maps will be added in the next few days, with more to follow hopefully very soon. :-)
- If you know of a cool map that you think would be fun to run, even if you don't have the skillz to run it yourself then mail us. Once. Feel free to suggest any map but do please try to use a little common sense. Some maps have the most beautiful architecture and truly innovative QC but if it takes 5 minutes to do an Easy Run it really isn't suitable. Also, bear in mind that any map that's been reviewed on Shambler's Site we will already know about. ;-)
- Just because you've suggested a map doesn't mean it will be added to the tables immediately (or ever). Please try and refrain from bugging us about it.
- If you suggest a new multi-level episode then it means someone will have to write a new stats prog for it. This takes time and a lot of effort so again, patience.
- We will NOT be giving any clues about which maps are going to be added and when. This is primarily because if we did then as soon as it is added we would receive 800 identical month-old demos. Constantly asking will just annoy us.
- Oh yeah, and please make sure that your suggestion contains a start, some monsters and an exit. I think you know what I mean.
So there you have it. Any questions then mail us, ICQ us or post something on the Message Board. Above all, let's keep on running the greatest game ever made. You know it makes sense.
BTW. There will be a demo update sometime over the weekend. I couldn't do one this week as I have had an absolute c*&t of a week at work.

Shut the f*ck up and have fun! - 7:23 PM
It seems that in a recent months there are a lot of people, who shall remain
nick-less, that often take it upon themselves to complain about a lot of things
SDA related. Maybe it's the stupid fileplanet situation on gamespy, which we
have no control over, or the instability of the message board, which we also
have no control over and Gamespy doens't believe that it malfunctions.
There's nothing wrong at all with kindly pointing out typos and mess ups
in the tables (I have to thank Matthias for always keeping tabs on us) but
we don't want to hear complaints about things we can't control. Lately some
people have wondered why I don't do updates anymore. One reason is I simply
don't have time. But the main reason is that it wasn't fun anymore. I started
my quake page over four years ago just because I felt like having a resource
to list all the speed running records. At the time they all sucked because it
was mainly just me. Over the past 4.5 years I've seen nearly a gig of demo
come in my inbox. Some have sucked. Some are ok. Some are great. Some make
my jaw drop to this day in amazement. I guess that's why I started it all...
to see what could be done.
But you know what? A few months ago I quit caring as much, because a sum
of a lot of people made the whole thing not fun anymore. You know who you are
most likely, and I know you'll probably take this to mean that i 'hate' you all
and I dont really care if you think that anymore. As far as I'm concerned you
won't see an update from me again.
Good luck Stubby and Richard...
